However, before they mature, French Bulldog puppies do tend to have their own unique characteristics and quirks. FRENCH BULLDOG ORIGIN
The Frenchie’s history, interestingly enough, began in England during the mid-1800s. Toy-sized bulldogs were a fan favourite amongst lace makers and were a dog breed thought to bring good fortune. When these lace workers moved to France after the industrial revolution, they took these dogs with them, eventually resulting in the French Bulldog breed that is cherished to this day!
Here are some fast facts about the French Bulldog’s history:
- French Bulldogs developed their characteristic ‘bat ears’ after being cross-bred with terriers upon their arrival in France.
- Frenchies became known as city dogs after their popularity began to skyrocket in Paris.
- Throughout the 19th century, Frenchies were considered to be the height of fashion within all tiers of French society.
- French Bulldogs became fast-favourites among the small dog breeds in the United States during the early 1900s.
FRENCH BULLDOG PERSONALITY
French Bulldogs, as a breed, are generally quite calm and playful. French Bulldog puppies, on the other hand, are fun-loving, energetic and curious. Puppies, like people, change as they grow up. It’s always recommended to take your puppy for training classes as soon as they’re ready for it – this helps them adapt to being social with other people and pets outside of their home environment.
Here are some of the key personality traits of French Bulldog puppies:
- They love to sleep – but they also love attention. Your French Bulldog puppy might sleep a lot, but they need just as much attention and will hound you for it if they feel left out.
- They get separation anxiety. This is a trait that most Frenchie puppies carry into adulthood.
- They’re very friendly with other animals and children. Although, a few of them may be shy. After a few training classes and walks spent in public parks, their social anxiety should disappear entirely.
- They love the outdoors – even though they’re apartment friendly dogs. In their youth, French Bulldog puppies are eager to explore and go on adventures with their owner.
- They’re intelligent and playtime is a major form of mental stimulation for them. Since they’re social dogs by nature, French Bulldog puppies enjoy engaging in frequent playtime with their families.
FRENCH BULLDOG PUPPY APPEARANCE
French Bulldog puppies don’t look too different compared to their fully-grown counterparts, although there are some slight differences. Males and females of this breed are roughly the same size and height, and they come in a variety of colours.
Here’s a quick run-through of the Frenchie puppy’s most defining features:
- ‘Bat ears’ – All French Bulldog puppies come into the world with the breed’s signature ‘bat’ ears. Their ears start a little bit bigger than the rest of their bodies, making these pups appear slightly disproportionate.
- Squished nose – Like all Bulldog breeds, Frenchie puppies are born with flat, ‘squished’ noses. As they grow older, their noses will develop and change in shape ever so slightly.
- Wrinkles – French Bulldog puppies have loose, wrinkled skin. In puppyhood, this feature is prominent all over their bodies. However, as they age, they’ll grow into their skin and their wrinkles will only really appear around their heads/faces.
- Small, stumpy little tails – French Bulldogs are naturally born with small, stumpy tails. Sometimes, people may think that their Frenchie puppies’ tails have been docked, but that’s not the case at all. Depending on their parents, the shapes of their tails may differ slightly, too (E.G, screw-shaped vs straighter tails).

When it comes to looking at French Bulldog puppies for sale, it’s important to keep a few key factors in mind. When looking for French Bulldog Breeders in Australia, make sure to keep an eye out for:
- Breeders with trusted reviews and a long history.
- Breeders who don’t have litters available often. This is a key indicator that a breeder is taking the right health and safety precautions when breeding French Bulldogs, as females are usually artificially inseminated and deliver their puppies via C-section.
- Breeders who are well-versed in the breed you’re looking for. When we say ‘well-versed’, we mean that they should know this breed inside and out.
- Breeders who encourage you to meet the parent dogs of your soon-to-be French Bulldog puppy.

Yes, French Bulldog puppies are big fans of taking time to rest and reset. On average Frenchie puppies require 18-20 hours of sleep per day. Whereas adult French Bulldogs only need 12-14 hours of sleep daily.
