Sturdy, stable and always amiable, the Pug is a favourite dog breed for Australian households. Its large, expressive eyes and wrinkly forehead give it a pensive – even innocent – expression. Needless to say, with the proper Pug pet insurance, this is a breed that will complete your household.
The first pugs were bred as companion dogs for ruling families in China. Some of these early pug ancestors were imported to Europe in the 16th century, and a new line of globe-trotting, aristocratic dog was born.
Pugs were popular at European courts in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the breed flourished in 19th-century England under the patronage of Queen Victoria. She kept many pugs of her own, and general involvement with dogs and breeding helped to establish the first Kennel Club.
Today’s enthusiastic owners eager to take out the best Pug insurance for their dog are by no means the first to feel that their Pug is in a class of its own. Suffice to say, owner enthusiasm is as much a trait of this breed as any of its other characteristics.

A low-maintenance breed, but a shortened snout and protruding eyes means they require special care in terms of temperature regulation and protection from injury.
Centuries of selective breeding have created an unmistakable physical profile for the Pug. This is a small dog with a short, flat coat and moderate grooming requirements. It’s the archetypal lap top.
But the real stand-out feature for this breed is its head and face. It features a distinctive, short muzzle and protruding eyes that – it should be noted – are prone to injury because they are poorly protected by the brow.
While colouration varies from one Pug to the next, all feature naturally floppy ears, a dark face mask (except in the case of black Pugs) and a tightly curled tail. It should also be noted that Pugs defy many lap-dog stereotypes and come across as more serious than fun-loving.
