Also known as the Alsatian in the UK and other parts of the world, the German Shepherd is one of the best-known dog breeds on the planet. Courageous, loyal and highly intelligent, the German Shepherd is a natural for high-energy police work. But it can also make a devoted (if slightly protective) family dog. With that in mind, PIA regularly provides German Shepherd pet insurance for families across the country.
A descendent of the St John’s Water Dog from Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers are a Canadian sensation that crossed the Atlantic in the 19th century and became well-known in the UK soon after.
Initially bred to be a fisherman’s best friend in chilly Atlantic waters, the Labrador Retriever would help with fetching ropes and hauling nets. The breed also lent itself well to being a retriever-style gun dog with the ability to work over land and water.
Given this breed’s 21st century success as a family dog, Labrador Retriever Pet Insurance is one of the most popular products we offer.
It turns out that in addition to having served as on-site helpers for fishermen – retrieving fish and waterfowl; they also make excellent service dogs for disabled persons. The retriever is also highly competent at search-and-rescue tasks, drug and bomb detection, and even some forms of therapy.

Given their tremendous stamina and desire to work, the German Shepherd requires daily exercise and high-energy activities.
Double coat
Tan with a black saddle
Without plenty of vigorous exercise, a German Shepherd may become bored and begin acting out by barking, chewing and digging.
This is a medium- to large-sized dog with a square forehead; a long, square-cut muzzle and dark, self-assured eyes. It features a thick double coat with medium or long fur. They most often come in the black-and-tan variety, though other variations are possible.
This is a high-energy dog that requires a great deal of exercise and engagement. Its active lifestyle and propensity for high-impact sports make it all the more important that your GSD is protected with German Shepherd insurance to ensure that’s it’s covered in the case of an accidental injury.
It’s also important to note that German Shepherds – whilst generally friendly – may not take well to strangers. Early socialisation ensures better behaviour around guests and strangers as it grows older. Even so, your GSD is likely to gravitate towards the role of a watchdog or protector.
